Magnuson Park Building 30 – Seismic Upgrade

Magnuson Park Building 30 was constructed over 75 years ago. With the recent completion of this renovation and upgrade it will continue to serve the needs of our community in the 21st Century.

The building is a part of the City of Seattle’s Sand Point Naval Air Station Historic District, and is heavily used by the local community for large assembly functions, office space and artist’s studios. The structure includes a large clear span area, a 3-story office block, and a combination high bay/2-story space.

The mix of construction types presented challenges to the design team. The structure was analyzed as one building. Existing wind frames were strengthened for seismic loads. New shear walls and braced frames were added at the east and west blocks. PSM provided a creative approach to seismic upgrades which made it possible to maintain and enhance the historic character of the building, both on the exterior façade and for interior spaces.
